Background of the study:
Vigilante groups have emerged as influential actors in areas where formal law enforcement is perceived as insufficient. In Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area, Ekiti State, these groups often take on the responsibility of curbing crime and maintaining public order (Ajayi, 2023). Rooted in communal solidarity and a sense of justice, vigilante groups operate alongside official security agencies to address crime in real time. Their activities, while sometimes controversial, are seen by community members as necessary in the face of rising criminality and bureaucratic inefficiencies (Adekunle, 2024). The local populace has at times embraced these groups as they provide immediate responses to security challenges, despite concerns about accountability and the potential for abuse of power (Ajayi, 2023). The phenomenon reflects broader societal trends, where trust in formal institutions is waning and community-based interventions are gaining prominence (Oluseyi, 2024). This study examines the dual role of vigilante groups as both protectors and potential perpetrators of justice, investigating how their actions influence crime rates and community perceptions in Ado-Ekiti (Adekunle, 2024).

Statement of the problem:
The reliance on vigilante groups in Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area has raised concerns regarding the balance between effective crime control and the potential for extrajudicial actions (Oluseyi, 2024). While these groups may temporarily reduce crime rates, their lack of formal accountability and oversight can lead to human rights violations and inconsistent enforcement of the law (Ajayi, 2023). The community is divided over their role, as some view them as necessary in the absence of adequate state intervention, whereas others fear the erosion of legal standards (Adekunle, 2024). This study seeks to critically assess the impact of vigilante activities on public safety and social order in the region (Oluseyi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of vigilante groups in curbing crime.

  2. To assess the impact of their activities on community safety.

  3. To recommend guidelines for integrating vigilante efforts with formal law enforcement.

Research questions:

  1. What is the role of vigilante groups in crime control in Ado-Ekiti?

  2. How do vigilante activities impact community perceptions of safety?

  3. What measures can ensure accountability in vigilante operations?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Vigilante groups significantly reduce crime rates in Ado-Ekiti.

  2. The activities of vigilante groups positively influence community safety perceptions.

  3. Integration of vigilante efforts with formal law enforcement enhances overall security.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it critically evaluates the contribution of vigilante groups in curbing crime while highlighting potential risks. Its findings will inform policy discussions on how to harness community efforts without compromising legal accountability, thereby ensuring a balanced approach to public safety (Ajayi, 2023; Adekunle, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to appraising the role of vigilante groups in curbing crime in Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area, Ekiti State. It focuses solely on community-based security initiatives and does not address broader national security issues.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Vigilante groups: Unofficial community organizations that take direct action to prevent and control crime.

  2. Crime control: Strategies employed to reduce the incidence of criminal behavior.

  3. Public order: The condition of societal stability and safety maintained through law and order.
